They’ve had their hearts set on their child going through the American Dream in the prescribed order and at the “right” time – and there is no one “right” time. This is why I encourage high-school graduates to either take a gap year and get some work experience, or go to community college first to get their feet wet and get their bearings on how different college is from high school. Please, parents, listen to this advice!

Some parents start allowing kids to remain home alone in short duration really early in their development. Some wait until their late teens.

Starting to allow your team to be home alone for potentially longer periods will (a.) allow them to learn how to responsibly manage their freedom and (b.) learn to cope and make decisions without a parental figure.

If you haven’t taken that plunge with your teen, you might want to consider it.
