Hi Suzanne, I am a counselor working in Shanghai and help students craft essays as a side business (not for my own students, of course). I created the College Essay Brainstorm app on iTunes to get them started. Just redesigned to include brainstorming questions for the Common App prompts.

Great list. Students & parents need to understand how the essay fits in the total application. It is part of a puzzle that when put together with all the other pieces of the application gives admissions a picture of the student. It is a very import part. You will not have a strong application without understand how the pieces must fit together and the key attributes that the colleges are looking for. We have a process that helps students understand these attributes and start to exhibit them early in their high school career. This makes writing the essay much easier

Hi Suzanne. Thanks so much for this list! I also have a great deal of experience helping students craft their essays. Usually we spend an hour or so brainstorming several topics, and as soon as their eyes light up, I know that that’s the topic they should write about. It’s incredibly fun and satisfying to help students see that they each have a story to tell, and that it is possible to do so within the confines of the genre of the college essay.
